Girl Talk increases sales of songs he samples
Electronic musician and mash-up extraordinaire, Girl Talk has been the centre of many discussions about the ethics of sampling. Now, in his defence, it looks like his soundbites actually help the artists he lends from.
As Pitchfork point out, a new report shows that songs sampled on his 2010 album All Day saw a sharp rise in sales following the LP’s release. More than 350 songs sampled were on All Day and Texan lawyer W. Michael Schuster investigated them all.
Although there was no correlation between the length of the samples and their increase in sales, Schuster still says the findings show an “objective financial review of fair use and the market effect”.
