Gilles Peterson talks of his collaboration with Elza Soares, previews new track “Aquarela do Brazil"
As previously reported, Gilles Peterson is currently prepping the release of his new album Sonzeira: ‘Brasil Bam Bam Bam’ - a concept record that plans to journey through the many flavours of Brazilian music culture.
Released on May 19 via Talkin’ Loud / Virgin EMI, the album is preceded by a number of teaser episodes hosted on the legendary DJ’s Soundcloud - each taking a closer look at the many influences and contributors that the album boasts.
“Brazil’s music culture is massive,’ says Gilles. ‘There’s the North – Bahia, Recife, the afro-brazilian sound. There’s batucada, the heavy sambas. Then bossa nova - Tom Jobim and all that history. There’s baile funk. There’s Tropicalia and the more soulful, funky scene championed by groups like Banda Black Rio, Trio Mocoto and icons like Gilberto Gil. Such a huge amount of stuff to fit in. I wanted to try and cover it all – to make a kind of Buena Vista meets club culture, but to keep it sonically very modern.”
On a new teaser episode, streaming exclusively below, Peterson reveals the story behind Elza Soares’ involvement on the record and gives a taster of what to expect from the collaboration including an excerpt of album track “Aquarela do Brazil”.
