When a label throws out three consecutively fantastic releases one after another, the few seconds that prelude pressing play on something new is always met with equal measures of excitement and trepidation. Who am I talking about? Merok, of course. What with Active Child, Blondes and Teengirl Fantasy soundtracking the best part of summer and beyond, it’s with fantastic timing that they unleash Gatekeeper. Whilst the aforementioned acts are awash with tropical and somewhat yearning soundscapes, Gatekeeper is Merok throwing out the hammer horror card to devastating effect – just in time for Halloween.
Inspired by the sounds and visions of forgotten b-movie film scores, classic fantasy games and lurid arcade imagery, the duo of Aaron David Ross and Matthew Arkell have created their own morbidly compelling discotheque. There’s most definitely going to be a murder on the dancefloor come December 13 when the resulting Giza EP is unleashed onto the world.
A visual companion to the EP in the form of a specially packaged, limited edition video cassette consisting of a corresponding video for every track will also be available, directed by similarly dark-minded and frequent Gatekeeper collaborators Thunder Horse art collective, who have previously worked with artists such as Diplo, Kid Sister and Fools Gold. Here’s the first clip to be revealed from the EP, the aptly titled ‘Chains’.
