French nouveau psychedelic songwriter Marietta shows off his ear for a good melody on "La carte"
French singer/songwriter Marietta released last year his Chris Cohen-produced sophomore album, an impressively cohesive work evoking the eccentric pop genius of Syd Barrett.
The third single from La Passagère (Born Bad Records) is a microcosm of the album itself, showing off his strung-out psychedelic side, which dominates the first half of the song, alongside his unerring and irrepressible knack for writing a good melody.
"La carte" ("The map" in English), builds up layer by layer: drums, piano, Marietta’s voice and then the guitar, one line over another, slowly filling out Chris Cohen’s spacious production. From its dark opening it transforms halfway through with the entry of a delicious guitar hook and up-tempo drumbeat.
Marietta trades vocal lines with another talented Parisian, Halo Maud, and as these two questioning voices try to suss each other out ("à quoi tu penses / ce qui me hante") there is the sense that everything might just be okay in the end, two people might just be able to begin to understand each other, if they can only plot out a map.
