Frank Ocean sued over Mary J Blige sample in “Super Rich Kids”
Frank Ocean sees himself in the midst of a legal battle over an allegedly unlicensed sample used in his Channel Orange track “Super Rich Kids”.
The song, which features fellow Odd Future front-runner Earl Sweatshirt, lends from Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” – which itself borrows from The Honeydrippers’ 1973 hit “Impeach the President”. The Hollywood Reporter note that a company called TufAmerica are seeking damages from Universal after the label “failed and refused to secure a license” to use the track.
TufAmerica are thought to only own about 3.15% of the Blige song in question and have previously sued the likes of Jay Z and Kanye West in similar cases.
