Folk musician and political activist, Richie Havens has passed away after suffering a heart attack yesterday morning (22 April).
Havens, best known for his famous opening performance at the 1969 Woodstock festival, had been active in music since the mid-60s right until the point of his death. His 40 year-plus career saw the singer release over 25 albums in total.
As well as being awarded the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award in 1991, Havens also performed at Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993.
He was 72 years of age.
