‘Hanging From Above’ is taken from Danish band Figurines‘ first album since 2008′s When The Deer Wore Blue. The album, which will be released on April 12 via The Control Group will be self titled, unusual for a fourth album, and perhaps suggesting that it will be an attempt by the band to redefine themselves. Certainly, musically and visually, Hanging From Above would appear to show them to be a more stylised outfit, which in this instance is certainly a positive. It can be taken as pejorative to refer to a song as ‘summery’, suggesting toe-tapping without technique, but here it is not to be taken so.
There is great skill in crafting a song that is the right side of saccharin, that is sweeping but avoids being overblown. Be warned, if you are adverse to impossibly beautiful, impeccably dressed people then you will not enjoy this – it feels a lot like an advert for an alternative Scandinavian M&S. You cannot deny that it’s beautiful though, and very well crafted, and equally so, the song. Languid, lithe and reclining in the sun – you think you know better, but you just can’t help falling for it.
