Chance The Rapper discusses reluctance to sign record deal
Creator of one of the best mixtapes this year, Chance The Rapper has come out and said he has “no reason” to pen a deal with a big label.
The Chicago musician released Acid Rap for free earlier this year, making it available for free from his official website, and – despite being one of the most sought-after performers – looks to be in no rush to change things.
Whilst independent releases have become more common these days, especially in the hip-hop communities, up-comers tend to use it as a stepping stone to a major – take The Weeknd’s recent leap to stardom, for one example.
But Chance seems adamant that this is not his plan, quoted as telling Rolling Stone: “There’s no reason to . It’s a dead industry.”
He continued:
“The whole point of Acid Rap was just to ask people a question: does the music business side of this dictate what type of project this is? If it’s all original music and it’s got this much emotion around it and it connects this way with this many people, is it a mixtape? What’s an album these days, anyways? ‘Cause I didn’t sell it, does that mean it’s not an official release? So I might not ever drop a for-sale project. Maybe I’ll just make my money touring?”
