Beck rejected offer to compose Mad Men theme
It’s hard to imagine the Mad Men opening credits without its RJD2-penned theme music, but things could have been a lot different. In a recent interview surrounding his upcoming new album release, Beck has revealed he was offered the chance to compose a song for the show.
Speaking to Billboard, the musician said that he turned down “repeated requests” to write the theme for Mad Men before even knowing what the show was.
“My instinct has definitely gone awry; I could give you many examples,” Beck is quoted as saying. “It’s about ad executives in the ’60s? They’re going to make a show about that? Really? Um, I don’t think so”.
He does admit regret now however, calling the series “just like the best show ever made”.
You can listen to the actual Mad Men theme below. Beck’s new album Morning Phase is out next week.
