BBC confirms second consecutive year of The Glastonbury Experience
For a second consecutive year, BBC will host The Glastonbury Experience in place of the festival which was cancelled in January due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Last year, BBC hosted The Glastonbury Experience following the cancellation of the festival's 50th anniversary celebrations due to COVID-19, and today (8 June) it's been confirmed that it'll return for a second year, after Glastonbury 2021 was cancelled at the start of the year due to the pandemic.
Much like last year, a series of celebratory content about Glastonbury Festival will be broadcast across BBC television, BBC iPlayer, BBC radio and BBC Sounds, including the return of the iPlayer pop-up channel, which will include sets from previous editions of the festival, documentaries and specially curated programmes.
Over 50 full sets will be available to watch on iPlayer, and over 30 sets will be available on BBC Sounds. On top of the archival sets, BBC iPlayer will make the Live At Worthy Farm performances available to watch from 24 June, following the livestream event last month.
Across the weekend, BBC Two and BBC Four will also show full sets from Radiohead (1997), Kylie (2019) and Fela Kuti (1984). The Fela Kuti set will mark the first time it's been shown in full on TV.
Clara Amfo says, "As a nation of music lovers, Glastonbury is truly a part of our DNA. Whether it’s two or twenty performances, we all have a collection of them seared into our memory from many a previous weekend on this Somerset farm! Sharing some of my personal faves is a real treat and a testament to the hard work from the Eavis family and these brilliant artists."
Lauren Laverne adds, "Bringing the world’s greatest festival into viewers’ homes with the BBC Glastonbury team is pretty much the best job in the world. A close second, however, is being given access to the archive to help curate a selection of performances by some of the many music icons to have graced the Glastonbury stages. I’ve got a line-up of legends for your living room on Sunday and I can’t wait to share it with you. See you down the front!"
