Azealia Banks wants to leave Universal, would “give anything” to sign to XL Recordings
Azealia Banks took to Twitter over the weekend to vent frustrations at her current imprint Universal, taking aim at the major label in a series of damning tweets.
The hip-hop star, who is still prepping her long-awaited debut album, pleaded on the social networking site for “Someone at Sony buy me off Universal please”, before expressing her regret at never signing to XL Recordings.
Banks was linked to the British imprint a few years back after signing a development deal with the company. But after falling out with the label’s head Richard Russell (who allegedly called her behaviour “amateur”), the partnership soon fell through (she later described Russell as “some English guy in West Bumblefrickin’ nowhere London”).
“I would literally give anything to be on XL right now,” Banks went on to tweet, adding: “Universal needs to just hand me over to another label who knows what to do with me … I’m tired of having to consult a group of old white guys about my black girl craft”.
Banks’ much-delayed debut album is to be entitled Broke With Expensive Taste.
