Ariana Grande's new hand tattoo doesn't actually translate to 7 Rings

30 January 2019, 10:23 | Written by Cerys Kenneally

Ariana Grande celebrated her new "7 Rings" single by getting a Japanese symbol hand tattoo, which unfortunately translates to Shichirin, a Japanese-style charcoal grill.

The faux pas has led to all sorts of speculations: Was "thank u, next" really about working in a takeaway food place? Is "7 Rings" actually about how many rings of onion a customer wants with their order? All we know is it's not going to be easy to wash her hands of this error.

Separately, the first symbol on her palm apparently represents the number seven, while the second symbol can translate to "hoop", "circle", "ring", or "wheel". Put them together and you get a Shichirin, which is basically a mini charcoal grill.

LA-based tattoo artist Kane Navasard uploaded the image of her new tattoo to Instgram, which soon came under fire from fans translating the tattoo. One user wrote, "she got barbecue tattooed on her hand i....i gotta go", while another posted the real translation for "7 Rings", "It means portable charcoal grill in Japanese. Supposed to be 七つの指輪 for 7 rings".

Ariana Grande apparently replied to a fan who pointed out thr error on Twitter, which has since been deleted. One user managed to screenshot Grande's reply before it disappeared, "Indeed, I left out "つの指" which should have gone in between. It hurt like fuck n still looks tight. I wouldn't have lasted one more symbol lmao. But this spot also peels a ton and won't last so if i miss it enough i'll suffer thru the whole thing next time."

"7 Rings" is the third single from Grande over the past few months, landing after the huge "thank u, next", and "imagine".

Earlier this month Ariana Grande confirmed her fifth album thank u, next will land on 8 February. Ariana Grande will play London's O2 Arena on 17, 19, and 20 August as part of her world tour. Find out more.
