Aphex Twin's Caustic Window test pressing bought by creator of Minecraft
Yesterday, we reported that the original test pressing for Aphex Twin’s long-lost 1994 album Caustic Window sold on Ebay for a whopping $46,300. “Who has that sort of money to spare?”, we thought. Well, the inventor of Minecraft, it seems.
Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson recently tweeted that he “kinda paid a lot for a double LP from the ’90s”, with those behind the Kickstarter campaign later confirming it.
“He’s a really cool guy, and didn’t even consider the charity aspect when buying it (but was really happy to hear that half is going to charity) – he’s been an Aphex fan since he was young,” a message from the WATMM board reads. “My daughter was blown away that the guy who made the game she endlessly plays bought a record off her dad for 46K.”
The Caustic Window saga first emerged in April, when the album found its way onto internet marketplace Discogs, with Richard D. James himself striking a deal with the sellers to release it democratically to fans instead. With the record now released, you can stream Caustic Window in full here.
