
Alabaster DePlume, Taqbir and L'Eclair lead line-up for Azorean festival Tremor 2022
UK composer Alasbaster DePlume, Moroccan iconoclasts Taqbir and Portugeuse songwriter Maria Reis lead the announcement for the eighth edition of Tremor, the multi-arts festival taking place this April on the island of São Miguel in the Azores.
The London-based, Manchester-raised artist is one of nine new additions to Tremor 2022's music programme alongside Brazilian artists Rodrigo Amarante and Sessa, cosmic Swiss septet L'Eclair, and Azorean acts Jonathan Tavares and Victoria.
As well as their collaborative residency with the Azorean Modular Orchestra, Chicago trio Bitchin' Bajas wnow play a concert based on their recent Switched On Ra album while Portuguese saxophonist Rodrigo Amado will join the residency between North American trumpeter Peter Evans and local young people from the Rabo de Peixe Music School. Evans will also work with the festival's resident band, a Escola de Música de Rabo de Peixe, in an experimental creation based around traditional and modern languages.
Tremor aims to connect cultures and artistic paths through such residencies, with 2022 highlights including the meeting of Lisbon-based transgender artist-performer Odete and Ece Canlı, the Turkish creator of behind acclaimed 2020 album Vox Flora, Vox Fauna.
Residencies which empower local communities are also central, with 2022 seeing the return of the São Miguel Deaf Association's project with creation collective ondamarela and the addition of the Coral de São José, the oldest choir in the Azores, and the postponed premier of Atlas - São Miguel, a community performance involving 100 Azoreans under the direction of artists Ana Borralho and João Galante.
