Lankum's Radie Peat unveils debut solo single, "Still I Love Him"

Lankum singer and multi-instrumentalist Radie Peat has released her first solo single, a rendition of the traditional love song, "Still I Love Him".

This version of the song first came to light when Peat's close friend and musical companion John
Francis Flynn came across it in the Irish Traditional Music Archives, in a section called "True Love", and wrote a melody to accompany it — which Peat built on with her own vocal arrangements.

"I like indirect," Peat says of the process. “I don’t like being too explicit and I wanted the freedom to make decisions around my voice without having to explain myself”. She continues, “creating emotional connection, that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m trying to capture the elation and devastation that can accompany obsessive love”.

Peat wanted her interpretation of the song to capture the multifaceted experience of love, as she explains: “I was trying to show the two sides of the coin here, I was trying to get across the two extremes that can exist when we are experiencing love. I was representing his escalating bad behaviour with minor chords and sombre tones."

"There has to be great love to go through that suffering," she adds. "I wanted the chorus brimming and gushing with romance represented in the vocals and instrumentally with the strings”.

"Still I Love Him" is out now on Rough Trade Records
