Kurt Cobain’s smashed Fender Mustang guitar from Nirvana's first US tour fetches nearly $500k at auction

Cobain used the guitar for two shows on Nirvana's first US tour in 1989. He played the tobacco sunburst Fender Mustang in Chicago, and smashed it the next night at Sonic Temple in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania.

The destroyed guitar was estimated to fetch $200,000 at an auction held over the weekend, but the winning bid was over double that, at $486,400. Visit julienslive.com to see images of the guitar.
