Julia Holter confirms new album, Materia
Julia Holter has announced Materia, a companion album to her 2024 release Something in the Room She Moves, and shared new single, "Fantasy".
The seven-track follow-up includes new songs that Holter wrote and recorded with her band between tours, a reimagining of "Materia" from Something in the Room She Moves, and songs first developed around the time that the album was being made. New single "Fantasy" arrives today, alongside a music video directed by Dicky Bahto in collaboration with Holter.
“This song of seeming willful abandon was somehow the most laborious undertaking of the entire record—it took over a year and went through various transformations—and I love that contradiction," Holter says of the track. "It’s dancey, it feels to me like a kind of conjuring. And amidst the momentum of reverie, there’s the line “blink at the light and hope to survive,” because daydreams in a fascist state can be scary too. I was trying to find the right sanguine tempo.”
Materia sees Holter reunite with the band from the 2024 album, with Elizabeth Goodfellow on drums, Devra Hoff on fretless bass, Maia on flute, Chris Speed on saxophone and clarinet, Tashi Wada on synths, and Kenny Gilmore on co-production, engineering, and mixing. The collection is described as the most concise expression of her fluidity as a composer over the years, capturing her feelings, experiences, and an overall sense of wonder.
