Jorja Smith to return with third album, What Are The Odds

After celebrating the tenth anniversary of her debut single "Blue Lights" at the start of this year, Jorja Smith is back with her first full-length release since her 2023 album, falling or flying. "Alive" arrives today as the first taster of the 12-track collection of songs, and sees Smith joined by Afrobeats artist Wizkid as she explores the fresh excitement of connection.

The track was written and recorded by the pair in London, and comes alongside a video directed by Gabriel Trautmann and shot in Paris. “I wanted ‘Alive’ to feel like one unforgettable summer night," Trautmann explains of the video concept. "Paris becomes almost another character in the film - full of warmth, movement and possibility. At its heart, it’s a celebration of friendship, connection and the feeling of being completely present in a moment you never want to end.”

In addition to the celebratory moments, What Are The Odds also delves into more personal territory for Smith. The album touches on themes of friendship, grief, growth, self-discovery and love through a dance-forward sound inspired by UK garage, grime, 2-Step, UK funky, soulful house, and Afro House.

What Are The Odds was produced entirely by P2J, who spoke to Smith about making a dance project after they collaborated on the song "Little Things" back in 2022. Most of the album was made across three sessions, with grime artist Devlin also featuring on a track with a re-recorded verse from his 2010 hit "London City".

The album's release is set for 21 August, coinciding with Smith's co-headline performance at All Points East in Victoria Park alongside Tems, with support from Nia Archives, kwn, Ayra Starr, Odeal, and more.
