Jim Ghedi unveils new song, "The Hungry Child"
Sheffield folk singer-songwriter Jim Ghedi has released his new single, "The Hungry Child".
"The Hungry Child" is Ghedi's first new music since his 2025 album, Wasteland, and sees him push his folk sound in a heavier direction. The song is inspired by a German poem from 1806-1808, translated by Judith Piepe, who entitled it The Procrastination Song. The poem tells the story of a starving child pleading for food and told to wait until it’s too late. The narrative of the oppressed being ignored and disregarded resonated with Ghedi, who wanted to capture the "sound of destruction" with the track.
Speaking about the track, Ghedi explains: "The meaning is pretty explicit here with not a lot of room to shy away from it, the tragic world events which are currently taking place and the oppression of innocent people really connected to the sentiment of this traditional song. Seeing the symbolism of the mother or the guardian figure unwilling to recognise what was happening in front of them, the injustice and loss of life."
