Jacob Alon, anaiis, Vector and more feature on new corto.alto album, SOME SMALL FORTUNE
corto.alto — the project of multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Liam Shortall — has announced his upcoming album, SOME SMALL FORTUNE, and shared new single "GO" featuring Nigerian lyricist Vector.
SOME SMALL FORTUNE follows corto.alto's 2024 album 30/108 and 2023 album Bad with Names. "GO" arrives as the latest preview of what is described as his most expansive work to date, following previous singles "THIEF", "APRIL" featuring anaiis, "DON'T LISTEN", and "WHODIS" featuring Mick Jenkins.
The influences behind SOME SMALL FORTUNE span electronic, classical, pop, and indie, with the album featuring additional collaborations from Jacob Alon, Oscar Jerome, BINA., Terra Kin and Eriff. “I wanted to write songs with artists that I love and have a proper collaboration with them, rather than be a control freak,” Shortall says. “I'm entering a different world with this music.”
The album is dedicated to memory and nostalgia, inspired by Shortall's reflections on childhood photos discovered when his parents moved out of his family home. The songs were recorded in his home studio in Glasgow alongside his longtime bandmates: drummer Graham Costello, pianist Fergus McCreadie and saxophonist Mateusz Sobieski. “Once I'm writing an album, I'll make around 100 tracks and only 12 to 15 will make the record,” Shortall says of the process. “You have to fail 90% of the time and once you do fail, you open yourself up to that 10% of sparks that can set the whole thing on fire.”
Following a run of North American tour dates ahead of the album's release, corto.alto will embark on their biggest UK and EU headline tour to date this year, which is set to include a headline show at Glasgow's Barrowlands Ballroom in 2027.
