Genital Shame sign to The Flenser and detail new album, Wellness Plan
Genital Shame — the solo project of Erin Dawson — has announced her second album, Wellness Plan, and shared lead single, “I Want To Die Before You”.
The album follows Genital Shame’s 2024 debut Chronic Illness Wish, which saw her establish an experimental sound rooted in black metal.
While making the album, Dawson found old microscopic footage of white blood cells searching for viruses, and lead single “I Want to Die Before You” references that image. "The 'You' in the title refers to both a literal person and a metaphor: the white blood cell,” Dawson says.
"I love the idea that even if you struggle with and mask a deep self-hate, there's something microscopic inside you voting for your continued, healthy existence — even if you feel like you don't deserve it," she continues. "It's also about the idea that as beautiful as that image is, it's still not quite enough."
On the album, Dawson's approach was informed by a background in music education and classical guitar, drawing from a tradition of black metal that treats the genre as something to dissect and reassemble. She describes Wellness Plan as "a process of acceptance through images of disappearing."
