Friedberg detail second album Goodwife and share title track
Friedberg, Anna Friedberg's London-based dance-punk collective, have announced their second album, Goodwife, inspired by Stop Making Sense, ESG, and her grandmother. The title track is out now.
The album was co-produced by Anna Friedberg, German composer and dance musician Daniel Brandt, and Oli Bayston (aka the British electro project Boxed In).
“Goodwife”, the first single and title track, goes revisionist-history on the life of Friedberg's grandmother, who was stuck in an abusive marriage for most of her life. “She lived in the countryside her whole life, but she was very smart and read lots of books and learnt French in her 70s and was into poetry,” Friedberg says. "Goodwife" follows a protagonist abandoning co-dependency and being good to herself rather than to everyone else: “A message that feels, sadly, more urgent than ever given everything happening in the world right now around women's safety and autonomy.”
Goodwife follows Friedberg’s 2024 debut Hardcore Workout Queen. Since then, she decided to lean more into dance music, a shift prompted by seeing ESG at London’s Jazz Cafe, supporting LCD Soundsystem at their 2025 Brixton Academy residency, and a US tour with Hot Chip.
The record was made with live performance in mind. “Playing shows over the last couple of years, it became more and more energetic and wild,” Friedberg explains. “It was just this crazy energy on stage that became more and more extreme so, for the first time, I started to write with the live band in my mind.”
A seven-minute short film accompanies the album campaign. Made of seven interconnected performance chapters – one per album single – it was inspired by Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense. The crew, cameras, and equipment are visible, and some of them even dance too. The film was shot in a single day with Amsterdam director Wouter Stoter. Check out the first minute for the first single below.
