Four unearthed Pixies songs arrive on streaming platforms
Pixies have rolled out four previously buried songs – “Dig For Fire (Albini Version)”, “Go Man Go”, “Brackish Boy”, and “Punk Loop” – after they appeared on vinyl as part of Dinked’s remastered versions of Bossanova and Trompe le Monde.
The four tracks date from 1987–1991 and were previously only available across two bonus 7-inch singles included in the limited Dinked International pressings of both albums, which were released last month.
The Steve Albini recording of “Dig For Fire” was recorded in late 1987 during the sessions for Surfer Rosa and sounds far away from the version released three years later.
“Go Man Go” is a Black Francis and Kim Deal co-write recorded by both Pixies and The Breeders during the sessions for Bossanova and Last Splash respectively, but it failed to make the cut for either record. Aside from appearing on a bootleg tape of Breeders demos and being aired a few times live at the time, the song faded from view until 2023, when The Breeders included their version on the 30th anniversary reissue of Last Splash, having discovered the lost master.
“Brackish Boy” is better known as a Frank Black song, recorded again for his eponymous 1993 debut solo album. This early version was mastered direct from the album session tape with no post-production. And “Punk Loop” was recorded in 1991 during the Trompe le Monde sessions and labelled simply “Punk Loop” MSTR.
The Dinked International edition of Bossanova is an oxblood vinyl package including a 16-page, 10-inch replica of the original UK booklet – featuring the original incorrect tracklisting – and a 7-inch of “Dig For Fire (Albini Version)” and “Go Man Go”. Trompe le Monde is on limited sky blue vinyl and includes a 7-inch with “Brackish Boy” and “Punk Loop”.
Both editions were remastered by Kevin Vanbergen, who has been working through the band’s tape archive to create new Dolby Atmos mixes and high-res masters of the catalogue, including Live at The BBC and Complete B-Sides.
Pixies will tour South America in March and April, and the US in May with Queens of the Stone Age.
