Effi o Blaenau
FOCUS Wales launches its first-ever Feature Film Competition
FOCUS Wales Film Festival has announced its inaugural Feature Film Competition, to take place during the festival's 2026 edition, returning to Wrexham between 7-9 May.
The Focus Wales Film Festival Feature Film Competition will feature screenings of two Welsh productions, Effi o Blaenau and Madfabulous, which received its world premiere at BFI Flare 2026.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to screen Madfabulous at the brilliant FOCUS Wales Film Festival," says Madfabulous director Celyn Jones. "Our film is set in North Wales, made in North Wales, and I’m from North Wales. It brings great joy to celebrate its beginnings with its community, ahead of its general release — before we share Henry Paget, the dancing marquess, with the wider world.”
Speaking about the competition, festival producer Robert Corcoran says: “When films like Effi o Blaenau and Madfabulous begin to break through, it demonstrates that Welsh stories can resonate far beyond their place of origin. Our ambition with FOCUS Wales is to build an international festival where those films don’t just screen — they launch, connect and travel. A platform that truly brings the world to Wales, and Wales to the world.”
Alongside the competition, FOCUS Wales is set to present a program of ninety Welsh and international short films at Grove Park Theatre.
