Flower Face details new album, Kill the Muse

Flower Face — the moniker of Ruby McKinnon — first had her breakout moment with her 2024 album, Girl Prometheus. She first previewed Kill the Muse with "Bad Dream", released last month, with "Better the Devil" landing as the second taster. The track delves into one of the album's central questions of what pain is worth, exploring the weight of dealing with bad habits while everyone else has moved on from them.

McKinnon wrote most of the songs on Kill the Muse while in the studio making Girl Prometheus pouring the pain of difficult experiences into the work. "No matter what I did, or how much I hurt myself, it all felt worth it if I could get a song out of it," she says, but found that the process was unsustainable upon returning to make Kill the Muse.

“My body and my heart have carried me through things in my life that have felt unsurvivable, so why am I betraying myself, betraying my body and heart by doing things that hurt me so much?” She adds: “If I want to grow as an artist, I have to learn how to write when I’m in a better place, too,”

Speaking about the upcoming album McKinnon continues: "You wake up in the wrong body and put on the wrong clothes and the whole world just keeps happening around you, and you keep yourself hidden away because there is safety in the loneliness, returning to the same agonizing love because there's familiarity in the pain and you can't make yourself believe that you deserve something more."

She cites a line from the poet Rick Siken: "a man takes his sadness down to the river and throws it in the river but then he's still left with the river / a man takes his sadness and throws it away but then he's still left with his hands."

Flower Face is currently closing out her debut North American headline tour with sold-out shows in Brooklyn and Chicago. She then continues to to the UK and Europe, where her debut London show sold out in under an hour, and dates in Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Cologne are also sold out.
