Fiona Apple soundtracks title sequence for Anya Taylor-Joy’s new series

Fiona Apple has provided the music for the opening title sequence of Lucky, the upcoming Apple TV+ miniseries starring Anya Taylor-Joy and based on Marissa Stapley’s 2021 novel.

Taylor-Joy, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, told Italian outlet Movieplayer.it that she wanted the music to be “mostly female-centric and have kind of a rock edge to it.” She then confirmed that “the legend, Fiona Apple” soundtracks the title sequences, adding that her teenage self was screaming. “I think her voice is a perfect description of this series. There’s a timbre and a rawness and a gravelliness that perfectly exemplifies the show.”

Co-star Timothy Olyphant was similarly emphatic about the impact of hearing Apple’s voice as the first episode’s credits roll. “I just remember this feeling of, ‘Oh, fuck yeah. This is going to be a great show.’ Like it just defined the whole show. This show must be awesome if Fiona Apple’s part of it.”

The miniseries follows a young con-woman, Lucky Armstrong, forced to go on the run after a multi-million-dollar heist goes sideways. The series is executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine.

No further details about the track have been released, but the pairing of Apple’s unmistakable voice with a story of reinvention and reckoning already has early word-of-mouth tilting in the show’s favour.

Lucky premieres on 15 July on Apple TV+
