Matt Berninger tells End of the Road crowd: "Going solo is a way to undo what Matt Berninger of The National is"
The National frontman Matt Berninger made his festival debut headlining End of the Road Festival last night, after an afternoon Q&A with some revealing information.
In a forest-set interview ahead of his performance, he told Uncut Magazine's Tom Pinnoc, "Going solo is a way to undo what Matt Berninger of The National is,” he explained. When an audience member asked what song he’s most proud of, he responded with “Bonnet Of Pins” from Get Sunk, explaining that “It’s really hard to write a rock song, but that’s one....”
Lightening the more reflective mood between anecdotes on his admiration for Leonard Cohen and his relationship with spirituality, Berninger’s final question came from an child in the audience who threw him a more random" curveball: “What’s your favourite cake?”
Berninger’s answer was yellow cake, specifically one made by his mother with butter and cinnamon. It was a warm end to the conversation, setting a comfortable tone for Berninger’s set later in the evening, which included a cover of Nirvana's "All Apologies"
End of the Road Festival continues today with headline sets from Self Esteem, DIIV, and Viagra Boys.
Earlybird tickets for the festival’s 20th anniversary edition in 2026 will be onsale from Tuesday 2 September via endoftheroadfestival.com
