Way Dynamic’s double bill at End of the Road features yo-yos, a songwriter lost to history, and an endless queue

On the final day of their 22-date EU/UK tour, Australian art-folk project Way Dynamic played two End of the Road Festival sets: a secret session and a full-band show that saw people queuing out the door.

The Melbourne/Naarm-based band, led by Dylan Young, started their day with a three-song set on the piano stage as part of Best Fit’s secret sessions. Their chosen cover — every piano stage alum plays one — was a lonely folk ballad long since lost to history, “Please Stop Breaking Me Down” by Ritchie Tierney.

They’ve covered the track before, a niche pull from a compilation album called Someone Like Me, a collection that ”honours the fleeting amateurism of hobby musicians,” according to the Bandcamp description. It was released in 2024 by the Melbourne label Efficient Space. “Please Stop Breaking Me Down” is the album closer and was revived from Tierney’s hyper-rare, out-of-print album For You, released in 1981. It’s the only song attached to Tierney’s name across streaming platforms. There are more Google results for the Way Dynamic cover than the original.

Having warmed up for the set by playing with yo-yos, they were talked into a reluctant on-stage demonstration after wrapping “Miffed It”, from last year’s Massive Shoe album. On her Substack, Waxahatchee called it “my favourite song in a VERY long time.”

Before leaving Larmer Tree Gardens for their US tour later this month, Way Dynamic played a second, highly anticipated set in the Folly tent, with hundreds unable to get inside the door — even though the set time clashed with Mac DeMarco on the Woods stage and Caroline on the Garden.

Modern Woman, Prewn, TTSFU, and Jordan Patterson were the other acts that played surprise sets at Best Fit’s woodland-sequestered piano stage today. Secret sessions continue throughout the weekend. Follow us on Instagram for the latest updates.
