Super Furry Animals return to End of the Road after 19 years to keep Sunday night weird
Back at End of the Road Festival for the first time since 2007, Super Furry Animals warmed up for CMAT on the main stage, their technicolour protest epics ensuring that weird levels didn’t drop despite the festival nearing its conclusion.
The Welsh legends were last at Larmer Tree Gardens during their Hey Venus! tour, playing the Garden stage - the biggest stage back then - for the festival's second edition alongside acts such as Yo La Tengo, Lambchop, and Sea Power. The Furries’ most recent studio album was released only a few years later, 2009’s Dark Days/Light Years, meaning their set tonight was a de facto greatest hits, kicking off with “(Drawing) Rings Around the World” from 2001’s major label debut Rings Around the World and closing with protest epic “The Man Don't Give a Fuck”. The latter song featured the requisite costume changes, switching from high-vis space warriors to a lineup of sasquatches.
The show, on the Woods stage before headliner CMAT, is the last in a run of festivals dates for Gruff Rhys and co, who were at Moseley Folk Festival yesterday, and earlier this year completed their first tour in a decade, coinciding with the release of Precreation Percolation, a compilation of early material from before their Creation Records era. The band also did an Uncut-hosted Q&A this afternoon on the Talking Heads stage.
CMAT and Kurt Vile face off tonight on the Woods and Garden stages respectively for the final night of End of the Road 2026.
