Downtown Boys share new single "Sirena" ahead of Public Luxury album due end of June

Providence political punks Downtown Boys have shared “Sirena”, the third single from their forthcoming album Public Luxury, alongside a video by Sudanese visual artist Sarah Elawad.

Translating from Spanish as “mermaid”, the track draws inspiration from “Gema”, a bolero standard beloved by singer Victoria Marie’s late grandmother, originally written by Los Dandys and reimagined by artists such as Javier Solís.

Victoria Marie explains: “We envision this song as a reminder that all of us have that siren in the form of a person, idea, dream, or gem that reflects light in darkness.”

The video was directed by Sarah Elawad, who is known for her work responding to Sudan’s ongoing war and the blooming‑flower early‑voting animation for Zohran Mamdani’s successful New York City mayoral campaign.

Downtown Boys’ roots lie in union halls. Victoria Marie and guitarist Joey La Neve DeFrancesco first met while organising at a hotel in Providence, and their early songs took aim at exploitative workplaces. Over a decade of relentless touring and three albums – including 2015’s Full Communism and their Sub Pop debut Cost of Living in 2017 – the quintet (completed by saxophonist Joe DeGeorge, bassist Mary Jane Regalado and drummer Joey Doubek) has carved out a reputation for raucous live shows fused with politics.

Now they return with Public Luxury, due 26 June via Sub Pop. Co‑produced by DeFrancesco and longtime ally Seth Manchester (Lambrini Girls, Model/Actriz) at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and mastered by Heba Kadry, the album sharpens the band’s punk‑and‑sax attack while keeping protest front and centre. The title spells out its thesis: "everything for everyone."

The new single follows “No Me Jodas” and “You’re a Ghost”.

To support the record, Downtown Boys will embark on a North American tour this summer, beginning 23 June in Hamden, Connecticut, and including support slots for Gang of Four later that month. UK and European listeners can grab a pearl arctic vinyl edition of Public Luxury, exclusive to those territories, via Mega Mart Europe, while the Loser edition lands on ocean blue wax in North America.

Public Luxury is released on 26 June via Sub Pop
