Douglas Dare covers Massive Attack's "Teardrop" for Piano Day 2023
To coincide with Piano Day 2023 today (29 March), Douglas Dare shares a cover of Massive Attack's 1998 classic "Teardrop".
Over the past week, Erased Tapes has been sharing tracks by Rival Consoles, William Basinski and Penguin Cafe to celebrate Piano Day 2023, and today the final release has arrived, which is a cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop" by Douglas Dare.
"Thinking about Piano Day, I wanted to choose a song where the piano part itself was instantly recognisable and integral to the arrangement, "Teardrop" is one of those songs," Douglas Dare explains "It’s been a favourite for as long as I can remember. For a kid that mainly grew up around classical music, it was a formative song that showed me that the piano could be dark and alternative. I recorded my version at home, and [in lieu of felt] I used a giant wool scarf to dampen the strings. I love hearing all the cricks and cracks of the piano; I guess I wanted to make it even more dark and alternative!"
Dare's cover marks his first outing since "Behind the Walls" arrived in February 2022.
Douglas Dare's cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop" is out now on Erased Tapes. He'll play a sold out show at London's Servant Jazz Quarters tonight (29 March) which will be livestreamed on Instagram.
