De La Soul detail 30th anniversary reissue of Stakes Is High

De La Soul have announced an expanded 30th anniversary edition of their seminal fourth album Stakes Is High, arriving 23 October via A.O.I. Records, distributed by Chrysalis. Pre-orders for the reissue open today, with a set of exclusive vinyl variants and a 4LP box set among the physical options.

Originally released in 1996, Stakes Is High marked a transition for the Long Island, NY trio: it was their first full-length without long-time producer Prince Paul, and a deliberate pivot towards a leaner, more urgent sound. The title track, produced by a then-emerging J Dilla, became one of the group’s signature moments, while cuts like “The Bizness” (featuring Common), “Itzsoweezee (HOT)”, and “Pony Ride” (with Truth Enola) underlined a sharpened focus on soul-informed production and pointed social commentary. The album peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and its title track reached No. 53 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The anniversary edition pairs the original album with a tranche of bonus material, including previously unreleased instrumental edits of the entire LP, the sought-after “Stakes Is High (J Dilla Remix)” featuring Mos Def and Truth Enola, a J Dilla Alternate Remix, and rare cuts “Chanel No. Fever” and “I Can’t Call It”. The tracklist runs to 26 bonus tracks across two extra LPs, covering the ground between De La Soul’s own De La Soul Remix of “Itzsoweezee (HOT)” and the instrumental versions of the album’s dozen core songs.

Physical editions include a 4LP hardcover set on black and white spoke-pattern vinyl with UV print of Dave, a 2 CD hardcover edition, and digital bundles. Exclusive pressings are also lined up: silver vinyl via Amazon, white vinyl through Germany’s HHV, and a Fat Beats/Get On Down variant that adds an exclusive lyric book.

The reissue lands as Stakes Is High continues to be reappraised as one of the era’s most clear-eyed hip-hop records. Its title track refrain remains a cultural shorthand decades on, and the presence of Dilla’s early fingerprints has only deepened interest in the sessions over time.
