“I missed the freedom and sponteneity of girlhood”: Coupdekat details debut LP Goodbye 2012!

London artist Coupdekat has detailed her long-awaited debut LP, Goodbye 2012!, a collection of songs that charts a path back to the unselfconscious optimism of the pre-social media era and record arriving 7 August.

A key figure in the capital’s pop revival as a co-founder of the Loud LDN collective, the artist born Katherine Reilly has framed the album as a rejection of the performative pressures that define modern online life. Where her earlier EPs – including last year’s BLOW HER UP AND SHE’LL BURST – pushed at the boundaries of electronic pop, this new record looks to recapture what she describes as the freedom of “girlhood”, channelling the aesthetic signifiers of the late 2000s: Claire’s Accessories, MySpace and novelty glasses.

“I wanted this album to be a return to a time before having a phone and social media, before the self-awareness and pressure of being perceived,” Reilly explains. “I missed the freedom and spontaneity of girlhood, I was so much more confident expressing myself back then. I wanted Goodbye 2012! to feel like a return to that moment in time.”

The record was written and recorded in New York, a move Reilly says allowed her to embrace the spontaneity she was seeking. Its title references the beloved YouTube time capsule Goodbye 2010! – a nod to an era of online innocence before algorithms and commercialisation took hold. The album’s artwork, drawn from her Facebook archives, features a selfie with a friend at Claire’s Accessories, complete with neon glasses.

To mark the announcement, Reilly has shared the new track "kisses", produced by Cowboy Lansky (Lil Yachty, After, MGNA Crrrta), which draws on the visceral, beatbox-influenced sound of Copenhagen’s haloplus+, which was born from her own departure from New York to LA. “It was hard to leave but my heart was full,” Reilly adds. “I sampled the sounds of the camera – turning on, turning off, the flash, the buttons – with pen taps and glitches. I wanted it to feel almost like ASMR in the way you feel very, very close to someone. But lyrically, it’s about the reality of leaving them.”
