Cordelia Gartside announces debut EP, pattern repeating
Alt-rock artist Cordelia Gartside has revealed plans for her first EP, pattern repeating, and shared new single “laura palmer”.
The announcement arrives with the new single “laura palmer”, following last month’s EP teaser “good”, as well as earlier singles "hospital corners" and "x ray". Gartside has also announced an EP launch show at The Shacklewell Arms in London on 25 November.
The track takes its title from the Twin Peaks character of the same name, and chronicles the experience of being wanted but not understood. Gartside shifts between Laura and the first person, offering her perspective on what is hidden beneath the image others create of her.
“Two years ago, I started watching Twin Peaks with a friend,” Gartside recalls. “The week before Lynch died we saw ‘Fire Walk with Me’ at an old cinema. In a peeling room with red velvet curtains, I felt it change my life in real time. I’d never written about a fictional character before, but I’m not sure Laura Palmer is a fictional character. She’s very real to me.”
Recorded largely live with Gartside’s band in a handful of takes, pattern repeating was later expanded with vocals and overdubs captured across bedrooms, friends’ living rooms and rehearsal studios. Her sound is informed by the likes of Fiona Apple, Mitski and Radiohead, with her visual world defined by old-internet oddities, degraded digital imagery and CCTV footage, leaning into capturing a sense of nostalgia with her sound.
Following sold-out headline shows at The Lexington and The George Tavern, Gartside has also made appearances at Liverpool Sound City, The Great Escape and Brighton Psych Fest. Ahead of her EP launch show, she will perform at Left Of The Dial Rotterdam on 23 and 24 October and tonight, at Green Door Store, Brighton, supporting M. Woodroe.
