Coco Smith signs to VHS Records and announces new album, You Won’t Get My Message but You’ll Hear It
NYC singer-songwriter Coco Smith has announced their signing to Vinegar Hill Sound Records, shared plans for their new album, You Won’t Get My Message but You’ll Hear It, and released new single "Multiform".
Floating through New York's growing folk scene, Smith released their debut album, Voice Memos, in 2024, and has performed alongside artists including Avery Friedman, Wulfer, and Untitled Freak. On You Won’t Get My Message but You’ll Hear It, Smith explores the idea of "triumph, despite", the idea that reaching the last resort can pull you out of a hard time.
"Multiform" follows previous single "Tortious" as a confronting track from Smith, as they explain: "It’s about anger that I can’t get out, so it manifests in this song.”
The concept of "triumph, despite" is said to be reflective of Smith's musical journey and personal experiences of family illness, financial difficulties, love, and grief, as You Won’t Get My Message but You’ll Hear It delves into what it means to be "hopeless in a vacuum". Smith identifies it as a core concept in folk music which they also see in their influences, including Big Thief, Pinegrove, and Armlock.
