Cartel's Ryan David Roberts shares details of new project General Assembly
Winnipeg songwriter Ryan David Roberts, formerly of pop punk band Cartel, has announced a new project called General Assembly and detailed its debut album Fundamental Balancing, alongside first single "Bad Habit".
Roberts co-founded Cartel in Georgia and co-wrote its early material. The punk band signed to a major label and released a gold-selling record (2005's "Honestly") before he left the band to write music in a different style. He settled in Winnipeg, where he began writing the songs that became General Assembly.
The LP arrives on 4 December via House of Wonders Records. "Bad Habit" is out now. Roberts brought 30 songs to Winnipeg's House of Wonders, letting the recording process guide the direction, and whittling them down to the album's final 11.
“Working on 'Bad Habit' was an unexpected joy,” Roberts said. “It blew up all my plans in the best way.”
General Assembly will play a release show at The Handsome Daughter in Winnipeg on 5 December, presented by Real Love Winnipeg. Naked Elevator Ride and Merin will open. Tickets go on sale today.
Fundamental Balancing was produced, engineered, and mixed by Fuhr (Amos the Kid, Virgo Rising, Yes We Mystic) and mastered by Donavan Ostapowich (Show Pony, Tired Cossack, Good Bandits), both at House of Wonders in Winnipeg. Contributors include Jasmine Henry (Amos the Kid), Arielle Beaupré (Lotai, Amos the Kid), Eric Ross (Yes We Mystic), and Luis Almeida. The record will be available on cassette and streaming services.
