Carrie Underwood to replace Katy Perry as new American Idol judge
Two decades after auditioning for American Idol, Carrie Underwood has been announced as the new judge for its 23rd season.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Katy Perry would be stepping away as a judge on American Idol after seven seasons. She was a judge alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan since the show was revived by ABC in 2018.
It has now been revealed that Carrie Underwood will be filling her shoes, twenty years after she first auditioned for the show.
In the teaser clip, there is a throwback to her getting ready for her audition, spliced with clips of her preparing to step into her new role. As she steps behind the judges desk, she says: "Twenty years ago I was standing on a stage just like this one," to which Lionel Richie replies: "And now you’re sitting here with us."
The next American Idol season launches on 6 March via ABC and streams on Hulu.
