Carissa’s Wierd to return with first album in 25 years
Arizona-via-Seattle slowcore legends Carissa's Wierd have announced their return, with their first new album since 2002 arriving in January next year. It's called Somewhere Further Than Far Away and the lead single is out now.
Speaking about the single, "No One Lives Here Anymore", Brooke says, “In a way, the song sets the stage for the album, visiting abandoned places that no longer belong to you. A nostalgia for a past that doesn’t exist anymore.”
Carissa’s Wierd (yes, it's spelt that way) are set to return to the stage at the And Always Forever Festival in Los Angeles on 8 November, where they will appear on a lineup that also includes Sophia Stel, The American Analog Set, and Dutch Interior.
Formed in Tucson, Arizona, in 1995, Carissa’s Wierd released three full-length albums between 2000 and 2002 on Seattle labels Brown and Sad Robot before breaking up in 2003. Brooke and Champion remained in touch during the intervening years, with Brooke noting, “We never stopped writing music, but when we make Carissa’s Wierd, we are writing just for each other.”
A long-distance creative partnership has culminated in Somewhere Further Than Far Away, recorded primarily in their respective bedrooms during the winter of 2026 before being finished over five days at The Hall of Justice Studio in Seattle. “If you listen close,” Brooke said, “You can hear the creaky guestroom in my house where I recorded my guitar and vocal parts.”
They pored over old journals and photo albums to get into the OG Carissa's Wierd mindset. And their return has been met with enthusiasm from fans, something that has surprised the pair. “It's not easy music to appreciate,” Brooke said. “You have to meet it halfway. And I'm surprised that 30 years later, people are still willing to meet it halfway.”
The sentiments under the YouTube video for the new single speak volumes, including "we are truly the luckiest people alive to witness carissa's wierd coming back", and "This is so significant for so many of us".
