Buscabulla, Chromeo and more feature on new Girl Ultra album, RRRomeo
Girl Ultra — the moniker of Mexican R&B artist Mariana de Miguel — has announced her upcoming album, RRRomeo, and shared lead single, "Denisse".
Following her 2024 album blush, Girl Ultra is back with what is described as her most ambitious work yet. RRRomeo was co-produced with funk duo Chromeo and delves into lust, friendship, heartbreak, and intimacy, through the sounds of 80s pop, Latin Rock, and Mexican nightlife that Girl Ultra grew up with. The dub-reggae-inspired track "Denisse" arrives as the first preview of the album, alongside a new music video shot in Mexico City.
“At its core, ‘Denisse’ is a message of letting go and flying away from something that you don't want with the quiet hope of seeing your childhood best friend again years later, and exchanging the weight of adult life," Girl Ultra explains of the song. "I think everyone has a Denisse, someone who remains suspended in memory forever."
"I wanted to reconnect with that kind of storytelling: cinematic, deeply visual, and soaked in nostalgia," she continues. "‘Denisse’ lives inside nostalgia, not just lyrically, but sonically. That instinct feels central to how I understand Girl Ultra, genre-fluid, emotionally restless, always shifting shape while holding onto feeling. The song left us with something unexpectedly tender by the end of the process.
In addition to Chromeo, RRRomeo features contributions from synth-pop duo Buscabulla, singer-songwriter Empress Of, and funk artist Jean Tonique. In addition to drawing from her childhood influences, Girl Ultra also pulls from garage rock and house music to push her sound further. “Girl Ultra can be whatever I choose it to be at the moment,” she comments.
