BRIT Awards 2023: another big night for Harry Styles

11 February 2023, 22:30 | Written by David Cobbald

This year's BRITs saw Harry Styles win a whopping four statues, with Beyoncé and Wet Leg closely following with two apiece.

Tonight's ceremony in London's O2 Arena was full of predictable moments and awkward conversations, but nothing could stop the Harry Styles train from charging through the stadium.

Aitch began the proceedings by winning Best Hop Hop/Grime/Rap Act, and gave an emotional speech saying "not many people, especially from my side of Manchester, get to stand up here and receive such an award." When Harry Styles received the award for Best Pop/R&B Act, he surprisingly didn't make the same remark after his controversial Grammy's speech last week.

Becky Hill entertainingly fumbled over her words when receiving the award for Best Dance Act. "I did plan something but it's going to go to shit now," she began, before she proceeded to do exactly that. Biggest thanks of all went to her fans for voting for her two years in a row, and she just about managed to hold it together before exiting the stage.

"That rock'n'roll, it just won't go away," announced Wet Leg, winners of the Best New Artist award, and a video message from Beyoncé played as she won International Artist of the Year, thanking "her fans in Britain for their continued support over the years."

As he won his second award for Best Artist, Harry thanked his OneDirection bandmates, Niall, Louis, Liam and Zayn, saying he wouldn't be there without them, before addressing the elephant in the room by giving a shout out to the female nominees of the night and dedicating his win to them.

International Group of the Year went to Ireland's own Fontaines D.C., and Carlos O'Connell took to the stage to accept the award on behalf of the band as they're on tour in Australia. He dedicated the award to his bandmates, and also to his unborn daughter due in ten days.

For their second win, Wet Leg managed to awkwardly thank their friends on stage, before a quick "fuck the Tories" as they finished. For her second win with International Song of the Year, Beyoncé returned on screen to say that "BREAK MY SOUL" was made for the single purpose of dancing, and she hopes her fans keep dancing to it.

The 1975 won Best Rock/Alternative Act and Matty Healy gave a short and sweet speech, thanking the fans for voting for them and thanking their label Dirty Hit who are "doing big things at the moment."

As Harry won his final two awards for Best Song and Best Album, it seemed as though he ran out of things to thank, but graciously accepted each award to the deafening screams of his fans.
