Boards of Canada reveal details of Inferno, first new album in 13 years

Thirteen years after their last release, Warp-signed Boards of Canada have revealed Inferno, a new record set for release on the 29 May.

It's the fifth long player from the Scottish electronic duo Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin and the announcement comes after Boards of Canada posted a video on their social media accounts later week titled "Tape 05" – with corresponding uploads by Warp – with VHS-style visuals and footage about cults.

The record was first teased as much as a year back when fans noticed that the website used for clues in the marketing of their last album 2013's Tomorrow's Harvest – had been revived with a message reading "nobody home..." in English and morse code. Earlier this months, some fans were sent VHS tapes with the band's iconography - featuring visuals from analogue equipment, shortwave radio, and voice snippets – to addresses used to previously buy Boards of Canada merchandise on Bleep. Posters linked to the band were also spotted in London, Tokyo, Los Angeles and New York containing a hexagon shape similar to that on the VHS tapes, after which Warp shared the posters on their social media.

Boards of Canada formed as teenagers and across their 40-year career released four full-length albums; their debut Music Has the Right to Children is still regarded as a landmark electronic album that broke the genre's cold, futuristic stereotype by introducing a distinctly warm, nostalgic, and organic sound.

Inferno will be available on special edition limited red translucent 2LP vinyl in triple gatefold sleeve with 16-page booklet, standard black 2LP vinyl, as well as CD and digital formats.
