“We filmed four music videos in a week”: Blood Lotus lines up debut LP Middle of the Night, unveils “Nightfall”

Hannah Wu’s Blood Lotus project has announced its first full-length record, Middle of the Night, arriving on 4 August alongside a new single, “Nightfall”, featuring Sydney artist Heart Armour.

The single “Nightfall” emerged from a single studio session, built around the quiet tension of a friendship edging into something more. Its accompanying video, shot in Taipei by director David Tse, leans into the atmosphere with a minimal crew and 16mm film, using almost exclusively natural light.

“We went to Taiwan and filmed four music videos in a week, all very much inspired and influenced by different subsets of Asian new wave cinema, particularly Taiwanese and Hong Kong New Wave,” Tse said. “It was actually my very first time in Asia. I found the experience incredibly special and moving.”

Across Middle of the Night, Wu worked closely with producers Kuya Neil and Voidhood, threading traditional Chinese instrumentation through club music, ambient textures and experimental R&B. Neil described the sessions as a new and exciting way of working, with the trio trading ideas in real time. “Sharing production duties with Voidhood, we were able to focus on all our strengths in the sessions and keep the momentum, taking turns adding elements and building off each other’s ideas in real time,” he said.

The 10-track record includes earlier singles “Motions”, “Dragonfruit” and “Corpus”. Named for the nocturnal hours in which it was written - in bedrooms, hotel rooms, on night walks and long drives - the album distils heartbreak into something both spectral and direct.

Middle of the Night is released on 4 August independently
