Big Red unveil debut single, "Isn't He Funny?"
Formed by members of The Orchestra (For Now), London-based trio Big Red have released their first song, "Isn't He Funny?".
The track arrives after months Big Red — which consists of The Orchestra (For Now) singer Joseph Scarisbrick, bassist Millie Kirby, and drummer Charlie Hancock — appearing on bills at various grassroots venues across London with a "deconstructed Americana" sound. In an Instagram post announcing the new release, the band write: "This marks the beginning of Big Red. This song is three people playing live in a room."
Speaking about the track, Scarisbrick explains: “I was playing a few shows with just a drummer and with this song I was improvising the lyrics on stage. The only line that stayed the same each time was 'Isn't He Funny?'. Afterwards I went home, wrote down the bits that I liked, and gradually pieced it together from all these different versions. I like that the song can't quite decide whether it's joking or breaking down. There’s all these threats and pull backs, small jabs and unease. It’s about trying to maintain control of how others see you while simultaneously losing control of yourself, and how actually it is best to not perform because you will go insane.”
In celebration of their first single, Big Red will be performing a London headline show at Third Man Records' Blue Basement on 23 July. They're also set to perform at End of the Road Festival in September, sharing The Folly stage with Shallowater, Maddie Ashman, and more.
