Big Red detail debut album, Big Sur

19 August 2026, 12:52 | Written by Kayla Sandiford

Big Red — the solo writing project of The Orchestra (For Now)'s Joseph Scarisbrick — have announced their first album, Big Sur, and shared new single, "Mission St.", alongside a run of UK headline shows.

While the project first started as a way for Scarisbrick to share songs independently of The Orchestra (For Now), Big Red has grown to include drummer Charlie Hancock and bassist-vocalist Millie Kirby. New single "Mission St." follows lead track "Isn't He Funny", and is both one of the earliest songs written for the project and a staple live favourite.

Scarisbrick describes it as "a sad song masquerading as an upbeat loud banger." He adds: "It is about seeing someone disappear right in front of you, and having no ability to bring them back. It's about a very specific person from my childhood."

Written between London and Santa Cruz, California in early 2025 and recorded live in Devon that April, Big Sur centres on distance and longing, following an imagined journey to the coastal cliffs. The songs lean into Americana influence, drawing on country narratives without being weighed down by nostalgia. The album was recorded live in a room with minimal overdubs or studio tweaks, with the writing described as "confessional; often opening up in brutal honesty".

Following the album's release and an appearance at End Of The Road Festival, Big Sur will play their first headline tour with dates scheduled in London, Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, and more throughout November.
