Baby Smith confront self-doubt on new song, "Walkie Talkie"
Baby Smith — the project of Australia-born, Berlin-based Ray Sonder and Saxon Gable — release "Walkie Talkie", the latest preview of their upcoming debut album, Lately, Love Is Dead.
"Walkie Talkie" follows previous singles "Limoncello River" and "Lately, Love Is Dead" as the latest preview of the band's first full-length work. Speaking about the track, Baby Smith explain: "'Walkie Talkie' is us shining a light on our past insecurities and self-doubt. Lyrically, we immersed ourselves in our past experiences, navigating relationships where we struggled to stay rational and fight off the paranoia of being with someone we couldn't completely trust. When someone is saying one thing and doing another, you feel torn about what the reality of your circumstances actually are. Which side of them can be trusted? What is the nature of your relationship? Are they in or out?
"All these questions come up in your head and in reality just the nature of those questions or the fact that they arise in the first place should be enough to make you see the truth but denial can be a cunning enemy," they continue. "We had these ghosts of the past show their faces and some long gone experiences were going through our heads when writing this. The colour and texture of the song came out in technicolour and somewhat care free but to us the emotion is mirky and claustrophobic. Contrast in songwriting is important and contradiction can create a nice tension sonically, we really played with this concept in 'Walkie Talkie'."
Lately, Love Is Dead is released on 10 July
