Babehoven announce new album I See Them, I See Me following vocal injury, share “Lasagna” video
Hudson, NY indie rock duo Babehoven have announced their third studio album, I See Them, I See Me, alongside a video for lead single “Lasagna”. The 14-track record was recorded as Maya Bon recovered from paralysis of her right vocal chord and is set for release on 18 September via Double Double Whammy.
“Sometimes when you’re deeply intertwined, you’re so close you can’t really see one another. You want the other to break in two, to reveal what’s underneath,” singer Maya Bon says of the track. “You feel small, stuck, and frantic all at once.”
Where previous Babehoven releases were largely built by Bon and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Albert in a tight creative bubble, I See Them, I See Me brought in three engineers: the New York psych artist Sam Evian; Kevin Copeland, known for his work with Allegra Krieger; and Phil Weinrobe, who has produced for Adrianne Lenker, Florist, and Billie Marten. The latter also acted as co-producer.
The band recorded across four different studios. Weinrobe’s insistence on “no playback, no headphones, and no preparation” pushed the sessions toward a live, immediate feel, with much of the record tracked by a six-person ensemble in the same room. “We wanted to incorporate a fresh, live, honest feel into the recordings,” the band says. “We actively tried to have more fun with making this album.”
During Babehoven’s first headline tour in 2024, Bon suffered paralysis of her right vocal cord and was told she might never sing again. “I have so much gratitude now that I am able to sing again,” she reflects. “To not only sing, but to sing with joy. I think part of the idea of ‘having fun’ with this album is trying to really enjoy what we can do, the gifts we have.” Around the same period, she underwent high-dose ketamine therapy for depression, a treatment that triggered lucid-dream states; many of the lyrics carry a surreal, associative quality.
That blurring feeds directly into the album’s title, which references a parallax view: different perspectives on the same reality. “As things with climate change and the state of the world get more dire and confusing, it’s hard to tell sometimes if what we’re experiencing is reality because it feels so unbelievably grim,” Bon says. Albert shares her unease but offers a counterweight: “We have a beautiful life, and also we are witnessing catastrophe after catastrophe happen around the world.”
