Melbourne indie rocker Suzi has released a new track, “Short Lived”, alongside a glowing endorsement from Dan Campbell of The Wonder Years. The song arrives as the latest in a string of self-released singles that have quietly built the DIY songwriter a reputation beyond Australia’s east coast.
“Short Lived” is a guitar-forward, hooky track that explores reluctant optimism. It pulls from the same well as Soccer Mommy or The Beths, and Campbell, who took Suzi out as support on The Wonder Years’ Australian run last year, put it plainly: “Suzi’s special. I don’t really know how else to put it,” he said. “Her melodies are so immediate and infectious, and her lyrics are such an open display of humanity that it really feels like these songs have lived in your head for years before you ever heard them.”
Suzi’s writing leans on specificity: half-remembered conversations, anxious second-guessing, the giddy rush of realising a crush might be mutual, and “Short Lived” turns that lens toward the moment you let yourself hope, even when experience tells you not to. “It makes no sense, I should have run by now,” the chorus goes.
The Melbourne artist has
carved out a career largely on her own terms. Coming up in a city where
indie, emo, and pop-punk share floor space and radio play without much
hand-wringing over genre boundaries, she began self-releasing music that
felt equally at home in all three camps. That fluidity made her a
natural fit for support slots when international acts toured through.
Alongside The Wonder Years, she’s opened for Tigers Jaw, Mom Jeans, and
others, earning a word-of-mouth following.
