"There was something about suddenly being in touch with the body, but also justice-seeking": Andrew Garfield credits Fela Kuti as inspiration for Spider-Man performance

In an interview with Track Star, actor Andrew Garfield revealed that Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti influenced his performance in The Amazing Spider-Man.

In the interview, Garfield explains that he creates a playlist for every character that he plays. While it's been just over a decade since The Amazing Spider-Man franchise concluded (with Tom Holland carrying the torch to reprise the character), and Garfield's most recent appearance has been in the period drama The Uprising, he revisited how Kuti served as a point of inspiration as he was preparing for the role of Spider-Man.

"So, I started listening to Fela Kuti when I first got Spider-Man," Garfield recalls. "There was something about the sound and the rhythm that was really useful to me for that character. There was something about suddenly being in touch with the body, but also justice-seeking, because obviously he was a revolutionary figure."

"The way that I moved in that film in the suit has some inspiration from Fela and his music," Garfield continues. "I create a playlist for every character that I play, which is a lovely, fun thing to do anyway. But I was like, 'There's something in this guy's power that I want to reflect in this guy's power'."
