American Football's Mike Kinsella among the many guests on Phoebe Bridgers' new album

Kinsella's involvement was hinted at months ago in the dishy GQ profile ahead of American Football's LP4, when "a singer-songwriter more famous than Mike will likely ever be sent him a song" that needed a "Midwest emo" guitar solo. That song turned out to be "Bobby", track 5 on Bridgers new album, Lost Weekend. It's her first in six years, since 2020's Punisher.

“I could write the best emo album ever,” Kinsella told the writer of the GQ piece. “It’s like she wants me to do a voiceover for a story that’s already written.” Check out "Bobby" for the result.

Other famous contributors announced ahead of time included her boygenius peers Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. There was Alex G, who recently scored the slasher film Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma - that soundtrack is out now - and Taylor Swift/Lorde/St Vincent collaborator Jack Antonoff. G and Antonoff are co-producers, playing various instruments from guitar to synth to drum programming. They join Bridgers' Punisher producers Tony Berg and Ethan Gruska.

But now the album is out, lots of other high-profile guests have been revealed: Bo Burnham is credited with vocals and lyrics on several tracks; legendary Seattle singer-songwriter Damien Jurado is a co-lyricist on two tracks. Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst plays harmonica on "I Can't Wait!". Garage-band forefather Greg Leisz, who's played with the likes of k.d. lang and Eric Clapton, contributes pedal steel to that same song. Blake Mills, who's played guitar for everyone from Fiona Apple to Bob Dylan to Feist, is here, too, playing various guitars throughout. The list really is staggering.
