"Loving someone who is chasing their own oblivion": Alex Amor announces debut album Heavenly Bodies, shares new single "Icarus"

Scottish singer-songwriter Alex Amor's debut LP arrives 21 August via VERO Music, with Great Escape set this week.

To accompany the announcement, the Scottish-raised artist has released new single "Icarus", which draws on Greek mythology to examine addiction and self-destruction.

Speaking on the song, she said it was “born from accumulated frustration in my personal life”. She added: “I’ve watched too many men I love – friends, family, partners – struggle with addiction and self destruction over the years. There’s something so innately human in the urge to escape: to outrun the mundanity of everyday life and the discomfort of being yourself.”

Amor described "Icarus" as being told “from the sidelines, as a witness to the chaos, and feeling powerless in that position”. She continued: “It’s about loving someone who is chasing their own oblivion, and realising that no matter how much you care, you can’t save someone who doesn’t want to save themselves. Sometimes love isn’t enough.”

Heavenly Bodies expands on those themes, incorporating celestial imagery and spiritual references. The record was written and recorded between London and Glasgow with collaborators Peter Brien, Baz Kaye, and Karma Kid. Mixing was handled by Matthew Neighbour, with mastering by Katie Tavini.

Amor has previously released three EPs – Love Language (2021), The Art of Letting Go (2022), and Super Sonic (2023) – and has accumulated more than seven million streams. She performs at The Great Escape in Brighton on 15 May and at London’s Footsteps Festival on 21 May.
